Tax Time Organization

Every year you have to hunt for everything required to do your taxes. All your proof of exemptions, your receipts, papers to prove that this and that were deductible are hidden somewhere but you have no idea where. It as if they sprouted little feet and ran off in the night just so you cannot find them.

Are you tired of having to tear your house apart year after year to find everything you need to file your taxes on time? If so, get organized. First depending on the amount of paperwork you need to put up and save for the next grueling season, you may want to invest in a couple of file cabinets. If it takes more, for instance if you have a small business, make sure you get the correct amount so that you will have storage for all your papers.

It is not going to do you any good to run out of room and have to store your important papers in two or three locations. That will entirely defeat the purpose of having the filing system in the first place. After you have purchased the file cabinets and decided where you are going to put them, get dividers for them so that you can label each file. This will cut down on the amount of time it takes to find something once you have filed it.

Make sure you have a good stapler, as sometimes there are many copies that belong to one particular expense. This is where a good marker comes in handy as well. The folders can be marked, the number of papers in one file should be written at the top of the file and you will know they are all in the same spot. This will eliminate losing the one paper you needed most, because there is always one paper you cannot find.

Do not forget the folders for keeping small papers and receipts in that need to be all-together. These are also handy for keeping prior year tax returns in so that you will know where they are when you need them. An address book or planner will be a great investment for keeping phone and fax numbers handy if you need to track something down from a client or relative.

Invest in enough pencils to keep you stocked up, because they also nightwalkers that never seem to find their way back. A good electric pencil sharpener is a handy way of keeping the ones that did not run off sharpened. In addition, stock up on the erasers as well. If you do not already have one, a copier/scanner is very handy indeed. You should always make copies of all your tax papers, especially anything you have to send in to the IRS.

If you file your taxes using the online method, make copies anyway. There is no guarantee that your paperwork will be retrievable in case of a computer crash. Anything and everything that is extremely important should have back-up copies just in the rare instance that you cannot find the original. These are just some of the things you should have for taking care of your personal paperwork and any items you may need to file your taxes. However, it is a pretty basic list. If you can think of anything else that will help your organization efforts, you had better purchase that as well.
